Year One and Two

Writing exercise. We used "story starter dice" to choose WHEN, WHERE WHO WHY HOW WHAT.   These should be included in the story we writing about.  We also used " talking strip" to help students start talking about the story they are about to write.

We've been walking around the school, learning different shapes.  Students took photos and we  talked about it.

This week we are reading  'Climbing' and then answering questions from the Question Cube.

Making up own sentences about a picture in reading book

Using real objects to learn our beginning sounds

Year 2 came up with some words to describe items they had collected. We use these wow words to make our writing more interesting.

The Year ones enjoyed creating rabbit heads to help identify parts of a face.

This term we have been using 'Alphabet-Matching-with- Ice-Cream' to learn the sound and name of each letter of the alphabet.

Welcome to 2015!!!!

Term 3

This term the Year 1 students are looking at Fairy Tales.  Here is a story created on Puppet Pals and narrated by four Esol students with Mrs Howard in

Room 20

Can you guess which story it is?

The Year 2 Esol students are looking at Different Celebrations around the World for their Topic.

In week 2 we are learning about the Pingxi Lantern Festival in China:

Do you know why this Festival was created? Ask the Year 2 Esol students - they know!!

AMERICA:
ALBURQUERQUE BALLOON FESTIVAL

More that 750 hot air balloons from all over the world fly in the sky over the town of Aberquerque during this festival.

Using the app Skitch to record what we can see after researching this Festival on the web.
During our next lesson:
  • The children chose a word from above;
  • Added an adjective to it; and
  • Created a full sentence including their chosen word and adjective.
Here is Ka Ho's work.

Next we moved to Italy to look at the Carnival of Venice. This festival occurs once a year. During this festival, the people wear masks and celebrate with lots of food and entertainment.
We decided to make our own masks!

We are also working very hard on creating great written sentences. Here is an example of team work.  We started with a blend, expanded it into a sentence and then added an adjective.

Term 2

Plants and Seeds

  • Do you know what to do with a seed?
  • Do you know what two things a seed needs to grow?
  • Do you know why a plant needs roots?
Ask the Year 2 Esol students ..... they know!!!

What happens when food colouring is added to the flowers' water?...

This is what happened..

Our white flowers drank the water and changed colour.

Writing in Room 6

In Room 6, we are learning to write proper sentences with capital letters, full stops and good adjectives.

Room 1 - Pirate fun

After we finished reading Treasure Island, we hid some treasure in Room 1. Then we made a pirate hat and eye patch and drew a treasure map.  Mrs McGregor put on the hat and eye patch and followed the treasure map to see if she could find the treasure .... and she did!!  It was lots of gold coins.

We enjoy reading together in Room 1.  We also play English Language games to help us with our speaking.

NIGHT AND DAY

LIGHT AND DARK

HOW IS A     RAINBOW   MADE?

Do you know how we get a rainbow in the sky?
.....ask the Year 2 Esol students!!  They know!

LIGHTS         LIGHTS         LIGHTS      LIGHTS       LIGHTS

We have been looking at all the different lights that we use when it is dark.

Can you name 5 different types of lights?

(candle, torch, lightbulb, sun, moon)

REFLECTIONS

Look at our amazing pictures of a city at night.  We have drawn the reflection of the light from the buildings onto the water.

Reflection happens when the light bounces back at you,
for example:

. mirrors; and
. light reflecting off the water at   night.

Shadows, Shadows, Shadows!

During Term 2, the Year 2 students
have been learning about shadows:

  • What makes a shadow?
  • Why do shadows move?
  • How do shadows get bigger, smaller, longer, thiner?
OPAQUE: Materials that do not let light pass through them e.g. an apple.

Did you know that your shadow will be long early in the day because the sun is low in the sky?
In the middle of the day, your shadow is short because the sun is high in the sky.

During Term 1

The Year 2 students have been learning about tenses:

Yesterday Today - Tomorrow

This is an area of the English Language that needs lots or practice. We are learning through work in the Esol classroom and also through actually doing an action which we can then discuss.  This is a fun way to learn!

The Year 2 students are going on
school trip to the beach.

In Esol, we have been learning lots of
exciting things about the beach.
